Getting a traffic citation can be a scary experience, but paying the fine that comes along with your citation can be even more frightening. Fortunately, for most traffic violations and citations the option to appeal exists. Depending on the county, you have several options when appealing a ticket in Texas. Look into the following methods to appeal your ticket as well as any other options that may exist in the county where you received your citation.
Figure out what exactly your ticket is for and how much it will cost you. Contact the court listed on the back of your ticket if needed. Many courts list their ticket prices either online, on the back of the ticket, or at the courthouse. Knowing how much your ticket is and what exactly your ticket is for will help you get it appealed easier.
Depending on how many traffic violations you have had in the past two years, you may be eligible to take defensive driving. Defensive driving courses can be taken online or in person. If you choose to take defensive driving, you must usually complete the course within a certain time period. In many counties, you may only take defensive driving once a year to be get out of a ticket.
You may also appear in person and handle your citation with a judge. If this is the option you choose, bring any and all necessary documents with you to court. This includes the ticket, a copy of your vehicle registration, and a copy of your insurance. If you decide to appeal your ticket, you may still have to pay any associated court costs for appearing in court. You also may not have any charges dropped so just be prepared for that option.
