The Eight Main Hawaiian Islands: Geography, Character & Access

The Hawaiian archipelago comprises **137 islands, atolls, and shoals**, but **eight "main islands"** make up 99% of land area and population. From northwest to southeast:

1. Niʻihau — "The Forbidden Isle"

• Area: 180 km² (69 sq mi) | Population: ~160 (Native Hawaiian, private)
• Owned by **Robinson family since 1864**. No tourism. Access: helicopter tours (owner-approved), hunting safaris. **Language stronghold** (Niʻihau dialect).

2. Kauaʻi — "The Garden Isle"

• Area: 1,456 km² (562 sq mi) | Population: ~73,000
• Oldest main island (5.1 Ma). **Nā Pali Coast, Waimea Canyon ("Grand Canyon of Pacific"), Hanalei Bay**. Wet (Mt. Waiʻaleʻale = 2nd wettest spot on Earth).

3. Oʻahu — "The Gathering Place"

• Area: 1,545 km² (597 sq mi) | Population: ~1,016,000 (70% of state)
• **Honolulu** (capital), **Waikīkī**, **Pearl Harbor**, **North Shore** (Pipeline, Sunset Beach). **Two shield volcanoes**: Waiʻanae (west), Koʻolau (east).

4. Molokaʻi — "The Friendly Isle"

• Area: 673 km² (260 sq mi) | Population: ~7,300
• **Highest sea cliffs** (3,900 ft), **Kalaupapa** (former leprosy settlement, now NHP), **longest fringing reef**. Low tourism, strong Hawaiian culture.

5. Lānaʻi — "The Pineapple Isle"

• 98% owned by **Larry Ellison** (Oracle). **Two Four Seasons resorts**, **Shipwreck Beach**, **Garden of the Gods**. Former Dole pineapple plantation (closed 1992).

6. Maui — "The Valley Isle"

• Area: 1,883 km² (727 sq mi) | Population: ~164,000
• **Haleakalā** (10,023 ft, dormant), **Road to Hāna**, **Kaanapali/Wailea resorts**, **Iao Valley**. **2023 Lahaina wildfire** devastated historic town.

7. Kahoʻolawe — "The Target Isle"

8. Hawaiʻi Island — "The Big Island"
