Where would you expect to find the oldest on ocean floor?
Oceanic crust forms at mid-ocean ridges and slowly moves away from the ridge as more crust forms behind it, through a process called seafloor spreading. Oceanic crust is therefore oldest at the edges of the oceans, farthest from the mid-ocean ridges. The oldest oceanic crust on Earth is found in the western Pacific Ocean, where some areas of the seafloor are over 180 million years old.
