Why are beaches so brown?

Most beaches are not brown; white is actually the most common beach color. Brown sand gets its color from tiny particles of decaying vegetation and organic matter, such as eroded cliffs, that have washed up on the shore. The organic matter also gives brown sand its characteristic pungent odor.
