US States and Territories Bordering the Pacific Ocean
Seven US states and territories have Pacific coastlines:
- Alaska — Vast, rugged coast (Arctic, Bering Sea, Gulf of Alaska). Longest coastline of any state.
- California — Iconic 1,350 km coast; major ports (LA/Long Beach, Oakland), population centers.
- Hawaii — Entire state is mid-Pacific archipelago; volcanic islands, coral reefs.
- Oregon — 580 km coast; dramatic cliffs, dunes, temperate rainforest.
- Washington — Salish Sea (Puget Sound), outer coast; Seattle, major ports.
- Guam (Territory) — Mariana Islands; strategic US base, tourism.
- Northern Mariana Islands (Commonwealth) — Saipan, Tinian, Rota; WWII history, tourism.
Note: American Samoa (Territory) is in the South Pacific but not typically grouped with "Pacific Coast" states. The contiguous US Pacific states are CA, OR, WA.
