Why did James Cook explore Tahiti?

The Royal Society chose Tahiti for Cook to observe the transit of Venus—a rare astronomical phenomenon that occurs only twice per century. In addition to the scientific interest, the visit was also an opportunity to establish contact with and learn more about the indigenous people of the island.
