Are Japanese fighting fish native to japan?

Japanese fighting fish, also known as Betta splendens, are actually native to Southeast Asia, specifically Thailand, Cambodia, Laos, and Vietnam. They are widely distributed in the shallow, slow-moving waters of rice paddies, canals, and swamps in these regions.

Betta splendens were introduced to Japan as ornamental fish in the early 20th century and have since become popular aquarium pets worldwide. However, they are not native to Japan and are not found in the wild there.
