Cities of Mauritius: Five Major Urban Centers
Mauritius has five officially designated cities (Municipal Council status), all on the main island:
- Port Louis — Capital, northwest. Economic, administrative, cultural heart. Waterfront, markets, museums, harbor.
- Beau Bassin-Rose Hill — Twin towns, Plaines Wilhems district. Central, residential, commercial, historic train line.
- Vacoas-Phoenix — Twin towns, Plaines Wilhems. Higher elevation (cooler), residential, near Curepipe.
- Curepipe — "City of Light" (first electric lights 1909), central plateau. Volcanic crater (Trou aux Cerfs), shopping, botanical garden, residential.
- Quatre Bornes — "La Ville des Fleurs," Plaines Wilhems. Central, commercial (market, malls), residential, transit hub.
Note on "Towns" vs "Cities"
- These five have Municipal City Councils.
- Other significant urban areas (e.g., Goodlands, Centre de Flacq, Mahebourg, Rose Belle, Surinam) are Village Councils or District Council areas — not "cities" legally.
- Population (2022 est.): Port Louis ~150k, Beau Bassin-Rose Hill ~110k, Vacoas-Phoenix ~110k, Curepipe ~85k, Quatre Bornes ~80k. Total urban ~70% of 1.26M.
Greater Urban Areas
The Port Louis Metropolitan Area (including Beau Bassin-Rose Hill, Quatre Bornes, Vacoas-Phoenix, Curepipe) forms a contiguous conurbation of ~600k+ — the island's economic engine.
