Assyria spanned parts of modern Iraq, Syria, and Turkey, so no single coordinate covers it. The ancient capital Aššur (Ashur) lies at approximately 35°28′ N, 43°15′ E on the Tigris River in present-day Iraq. Other key cities: Nineveh (36°22′ N, 43°09′ E), Nimrud (36°06′ N, 43°19′ E). The core zone straddles the Tigris valley between the Zagros foothills and the Syrian Desert.
