Why did John Locke flee England?

In 1683, John Locke fled England to escape religious persecution. He was a vocal critic of the Church of England and had written several works that were seen as heretical. As a result, he was forced to flee the country to avoid arrest. He lived in exile for several years in the Netherlands, where he continued to write and publish his works.
