Wrexham: The UK's Largest "Village" (Actually a Town)

The title "largest village in Great Britain" is often claimed by Wrexham (Wrecsam) in Wales—but it's technically a town.

• Rank: ~25th largest built-up area in England & Wales. Not top 10.

Why the "Village" Myth?

• Historically a market town (charter 1350).
• No cathedral → not a "city" until Sept 2022 (awarded for Queen's Platinum Jubilee).
• Welsh identity: Tref (town) vs Pentref (village). Wrexham = Tref.
• Media shorthand: "Biggest village" sounds better than "Formerly largest town without city status."

• Cranleigh, Surrey: ~22,000
• Haddenham, Buckinghamshire: ~11,000

City status (2022), Wrexham AFC (Reynolds/McElhenney ownership, promotion to League One), £200M+ investment, University, Industrial heritage (coal, brick, leather). It's a city now. The "village" label is retired.
