Why do United Kingdom countries use their own flag?

There are four countries within the United Kingdom: England, Scotland, Wales, and Northern Ireland. Each of these countries has its own flag, which is used to represent them both within the UK and internationally. These flags are steeped in history and are symbols of national pride and identity. Their usage in the UK is well established and recognized.
