The political unification of Wales and England occurred in stages, culminating in the 1707 formation of Great Britain.
Laws in Wales Acts (1535, 1542) under Henry VIII:
• Abolished Marcher Lordships and Welsh legal distinctiveness
• Extended English common law to Wales
• Created shire counties (Monmouthshire added later)
• Mandated English as sole official language of courts/government
• Granted Welsh representation in Parliament (27 MPs)
This created the "Kingdom of England and Wales" as a single legal jurisdiction—though "Wales" persisted culturally and geographically.
Acts of Union 1707 united:
• Kingdom of England (including Wales)
• Kingdom of Scotland
→ Kingdom of Great Britain (single parliament at Westminster)
Acts of Union 1800 added Ireland → United Kingdom of Great Britain and Ireland (1801–1922).
Irish Free State seceded → United Kingdom of Great Britain and Northern Ireland (current name).
Wales gained the Senedd (Welsh Parliament) with legislative powers—partial reversal of 1536 centralization, within the UK framework.
