How did Exeter get its name?
Exeter derives its name from the Celtic term Caerwysg, meaning 'stronghold by the water', referring to its strategic location on the River Exe. The Anglo-Saxons later settled in the area and called the town Exanceaster, meaning 'walled town on the Exe', which eventually evolved into the name Exeter.
