How did SoHo New York get its name?

The name "SoHo" is a portmanteau of the words "South" and "Houston", referring to the neighborhood's location in Lower Manhattan, bounded by Houston Street to the north, Canal Street to the south, Sixth Avenue to the west, and Lafayette Street to the east. The name "SoHo" was coined in the early 20th century by artists who moved into the area and began to use it as a place to live and work. The name quickly caught on and is now used to refer to the entire neighborhood.
