How can one get a degree at home in the UK?

Online learning

A relatively new method is offered by some UK institutions whereby students can attend lectures, study course material and complete assignments from the comfort of their own home. Typically this involves using a computer and an internet connection to access online resources and communicate with lecturers and tutors via email or video conferencing.

Part-time study

It is possible to study for a degree part-time at night, at weekends or during the summer months. This is an excellent option for those with other commitments such as family, work or leisure. You normally won't be able to complete your degree in the traditional three-year period but the extra time gives you more flexibility.

Open and distance learning

A form of part-time study, this enables students to learn mainly at home. Learning materials such as textbooks, course notes and CD-ROMs are provided by the university and additional support may be offered in the form of telephone and email help. It requires a high degree of self-discipline, but you will typically be able to choose the times that suit you best for your study and assignment work.

Summer school

If you are short of time or would prefer to avoid studying for a whole year, you may want to consider undertaking a summer school. Summer schools are short, intensive courses that typically run for a few weeks during the summer months. Although they are mainly designed for undergraduates, some postgraduate students also take part.

Correspondence course

Some colleges offer correspondence courses at both undergraduate and postgraduate level. Course materials are sent through the post and students return their assignments by mail. Some courses involve regular telephone tutorials.

Private tuition

Some students prefer to receive the support of a private tutor. Private tuition can be particularly helpful if you are struggling with a particular subject or if you want to improve your overall grades.
