First European Settlers in Wyoming

The first permanent European settlers in present-day Wyoming were French trappers and fur traders who established Fort Laramie in 1834. Prior to that, the region was home to Native American tribes including the Crow, Sioux, Cheyenne, and Shoshone for centuries.
