Driving from California to Seattle: Distance, Routes, and Time

The distance between California and Seattle depends entirely on your starting point in the Golden State. The most common reference is the Los Angeles to Seattle corridor.

LA to Seattle (I-5 Corridor)

  • Distance: ~1,150 miles (1,850 km)
  • Drive Time: 17–20 hours of pure driving (no stops).
  • Realistic Trip: 2–3 days with rest, meals, fuel, and overnight(s).
  • Route: I-5 North the entire way—Central Valley, Oregon's Willamette Valley, then Portland to Seattle.

San Francisco to Seattle

  • Distance: ~810 miles (1,300 km)
  • Drive Time: 12–14 hours pure driving; 1.5–2 days realistic.

San Diego to Seattle

  • Distance: ~1,250 miles (2,010 km)
  • Drive Time: 19–22 hours pure driving.

Alternative: Coastal Route (US-101 / CA-1)

Spectacular but adds 200+ miles and 6–10 hours. Best for a dedicated road trip, not a quick transit.

Flying

LAX/SEA: 2h 45m flight + airport time. SFO/SEA: 2h 15m. Often cheaper and vastly faster than driving unless you need a vehicle in Seattle.
