Things to Do Near Worthington State Forest, New Jersey

Worthington State Forest is located in a rugged and scenic area of mountainous northern New Jersey. Part of the Appalachian Trail goes through the forest and contains glacially formed Sunfish Pond. There are 26 miles of hiking trails, camping and picnicking areas including 1,527-foot Mt. Tammany. Wildlife abounds, from native brook trout in the Dunnfield Creek Natural Area to deer, turkey, black bear and small game.

  1. Hike the Appalachian Trail

    • New Jersey contains a 70-mile section of the Appalachian Trail. The Trail enters the state at Greenwood Lake, going westward toward the Kittatinny Ridge and then south to the Delaware Water Gap. It traverses forests, wetlands and farm areas, and passes through three state forests, two state parks and the Delaware Water Gap National Recreational Area. It attains 1,803 feet above sea level, the highest point in New Jersey, hence the name High Point.

    • Straddling state lines of New Jersey and Pennsylvania, the Delaware Water Gap National Recreational Area contains 40 miles of the Delaware River. At the southern end of the area is the Delaware Water Gap, where the river cuts between Mount Tammany in New Jersey and Mount Minsi in Pennsylvania. There are opportunities for canoeing, camping, kayaking, swimming, boating, fishing, rafting and tubing. Scenic attractions include the Water Gap itself, waterfalls, islands, hemlock forests, wetlands, beaches and historic areas.

    Millbrook Village

    • Located within Delaware Water Gap National Recreational Area, Milbrook Village is a re-creation of a 19th century rural community. Between Memorial Day and Labor Day volunteers and National Parks' Service employees, many in period dress, demonstrate crafts such as wooden fork making, blacksmithing, weaving, candle making and tinsmithing. Special events include maple sugaring in March, an Independence Day celebration in July, Millbrook Days in October and a Victorian Christmas in early December. The park is open year round, but the number of buildings open for tours depend on availability of volunteers.

    Camelback Mountain Waterpark

    • Camelback Mountain Waterpark, a family destination, is located 16 miles west of Worthington State Forest in Tannersville, Pennsylvania. It has 30 waterslides, and features Pharaoh's Phortress, a family play structure, the FlowRider for boogie boarders, the Vortex and Spin Cycle, which are bowl slides, the Kahuna Lagoon wave pool, the Titan Family Raft Ride and the Blue Nile Adventure River. Picnic tables are available as well as a food service area with a variety of vendors. Cabanas can be rented and changing areas are provided. The park is open from May to early September.

    Shawnee Mountain Ski Resort

    • Located seven miles west of Worthington State Forest in Pennsylvania, Shawnee Mountain Ski Resort opens in early December, weather permitting, and has events such as night skiing and the Shawnee Winter Carnival and Costume Carnival Day scheduled through March. There are 23 slopes and trails, two terrain parks and a snow-tubing park. Dining opportunities include the Hickory Licks Family Restaurant, serving lunch and dinner, the Black Diamond Grille at the Summit Lodge, the Hope Lodge Cafeteria, the Greenhouse Snack Bar and the Trepp Lodge Cafeteria. Childcare for children 18 months and older is available on the premises.
