How Many U.S. States? 50—Since 1959

The United States has had 50 states since August 21, 1959, when Hawaii was admitted. The number did not change in 2013—or any year since.

Statehood Timeline (Last Additions)

  • 47: New Mexico – Jan 6, 1912
  • 48: Arizona – Feb 14, 1912
  • 49: Alaska – Jan 3, 1959
  • 50: Hawaii – Aug 21, 1959

Common Confusions

  • Washington, D.C. is a federal district, not a state.
  • Puerto Rico, Guam, USVI, etc. are territories.
  • Proposals for 51st state (D.C., Puerto Rico) recur but require Congressional approval.

So whether it’s 2013, 2024, or 2050, the answer remains 50—unless Congress acts.
