Wyoming's Cities: Only Two Exceed 50,000 Residents

Wyoming is the least populous U.S. state (~580,000), and its urban landscape reflects that. Only two cities surpass 50,000 residents:

  1. Cheyenne (capital) – ~65,000
  2. Casper – ~58,000

All other incorporated places are officially towns (population <50,000). Notable towns include:

  • Laramie (~32,000) – University of Wyoming
  • Gillette (~33,000) – Energy hub
  • Rock Springs (~23,000)
  • Sheridan (~18,000)
  • Green River (~12,000)
  • Evanston (~12,000)
  • Riverton (~11,000)
  • Jackson (~10,000) – Gateway to Grand Teton/Yellowstone
  • Cody (~10,000) – Buffalo Bill heritage
  • Rawlins (~9,000)

Why So Few Cities?

Wyoming's economy (minerals, tourism, ranching) supports dispersed small communities rather than large metros. The state's vast area (97,813 sq mi, 10th largest) and low density (6.0/sq mi, 2nd lowest) reinforce this pattern.
