Las Vegas is not a state and therefore has no state capital. It is a major city in southern Nevada, which has its capital in Carson City—located near Lake Tahoe, roughly 450 miles (720 km) northwest of Las Vegas. This confusion sometimes arises because Las Vegas is Nevada's largest city and economic engine, but Carson City has been the state capital since Nevada's admission to the Union in 1864.
