Do You Need a Passport to Travel from California to New York?

No. California and New York are both states within the United States. Travel between them is domestic—no passport required.

Acceptable ID for Domestic Flights (TSA)

• REAL ID-compliant driver's license/state ID (required after May 7, 2025).
• U.S. Passport / Passport Card (works, but not required).
• DHS Trusted Traveler Cards (Global Entry, NEXUS, SENTRI, FAST).
• U.S. Military ID, Permanent Resident Card, Tribal ID.

Driving / Train / Bus

No ID check typically (except Amtrak may ask for photo ID). Carry a government-issued photo ID regardless.

Key Distinction

Passport = international travel. State ID / REAL ID = domestic travel. If you're a U.S. citizen, you never need a passport for interstate travel.
