The Mormon–Salt Lake City Connection

The link is foundational. In July 1847, Brigham Young led the first wave of Mormon (Latter-day Saint) pioneers into the Salt Lake Valley, declaring "This is the right place." Fleeing persecution in the Midwest, they sought religious freedom. The Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints became the organizing force for the settlement: laying out the grid city, building irrigation systems, establishing communal welfare, and governing civic life. The Salt Lake Temple (dedicated 1893) anchors Temple Square, the spiritual and symbolic heart. While Salt Lake City has diversified—now a majority non-Mormon metro—the Church remains a dominant cultural, economic, and political influence in Utah and the Intermountain West.
