What States Border Washington, D.C.?

Washington, D.C. is not a state and is not bordered by any state. It is a federal district bordered by:

• Maryland to the north, east, and southeast
• Virginia to the southwest and west (across the Potomac River)

The District was carved from land ceded by both states (1790 Residence Act). It has no voting representation in Congress, though it has three electoral votes for president (23rd Amendment).
