Why are most US states shaped weird?

Most US states are not shaped weirdly, in fact, most of them are rectangular or square. The states that have odd or irregularly-shaped borders are usually the result of historical events such as land cessions, territorial disputes, or natural geographic features.

Here are a few examples of states with unusual shapes:

- Colorado: Colorado has an irregular western boundary that follows the Continental Divide. The state's eastern boundary is straight, however, which is due to a land cession from the Kansas Territory in 1861.

- Oklahoma: The Texas Panhandle created a "panhandle" shaped portion on the western side of Oklahoma when the Oklahoma Territory was created in 1890.

- Michigan: Michigan's irregular shape is due to the Great Lakes, which form the state's boundaries on three sides. The Upper Peninsula of Michigan is separated from the Lower Peninsula by the Straits of Mackinac.

- Hawaii: Hawaii is made up of eight major islands and several smaller ones, which gives the state its unique shape.

- Alaska: Alaska's massive size and location in the far northwest corner of North America give it a very irregular shape. The state is bordered by Canada to the east and Russia to the west.
