Recreation for families and children are abundant in the area. Major attractions for children include an aquatics facility, museum and performing arts center.
The Museum of East Alabama carries a large collection of 19th and 20th century artifacts. The museum first opened in August 1989 at the old Clement hotel location. It is housed in the heart of Opelika's downtown district.
The most popular collections for children to explore include the Roanoke Dolls, vintage clothes and toys from the 1870s to 1950s era. The Roanoke Doll collection was created by Ella Smith, the first doll maker to manufacture black dolls in the South. A huge selection of other 19th and 20th century dolls are available to view in the west wing of the museum. Vintage clothing collections are divided into two sections: military uniforms and ladies apparel. Children can explore ladies formal gowns and vintage purses.
Special events are offered throughout the year. Past events have included the Civil War Voices play and Christmas in a Railroad Town. A rendition of Nat King Cole was also presented during its fundraiser drive. Contact the museum for future events and operational hours.
