The city of Roanoke is located about 168 miles west from the state capital, Richmond, Virginia.     • The Science Museum of Western Virginia is home to a number of hands-on interactive exhibits. One the exhibits, the Body Tech Gallery, teaches visitors about the different systems of the body and how they work. At the museum's Weather Gallery exhibit, children can learn about storms, rain, clouds and pretend to be a meteorologist on a real green screen. The museum also has a 40-foot star-dome planetarium on-site. It showcases various multimedia shows and sometimes offers seasonal sights of the night sky, according to the Science Museum of Western Virginia website. As of June 2010, daily admission to the museum's exhibits is $6 for children and $8 for adults.

    Mill Mountain Zoo

    • More than 80,000 people visit Mill Mountain Zoo every year. The zoo is home to 88 animals, representing 35 different species. Some of the animals at the zoo include the corsac fox, red panda, snow leopard, cougar, Burmese python and the Luzon bleeding heart dove. To see an overview of the zoo, visitors can take a ride aboard the Zoo Choo, a miniature G-16 train that travels around the different areas of the zoo, according to the Mill Mountain Zoo website. as of June 2010, daily admission is $5 for children ages 3 to 11, and $7.50 for adults.     George Washington and Jefferson National Forest

    • The George Washington and Jefferson National Forest covers nearly 1.9 million acres of land. It is home to many outdoor activities for the whole family, including hiking, camping, fishing, picnicking and bird watching. The forest is open 24 hours a day to visitors. Admission varies depending on the area of the forest you visit.

    Putt-Putt Fun Center

    • Roanoke's Putt-Putt Fun Center is a family amusement center. It is home to 36 putting holes. It also has an arcade room with a prize center and batting cages with different speeds and heights. There is a concession stand on-site that offers pizza, soft pretzels, ice cream and soft drinks. Every Thursday night, the Putt-Putt Fun Center offers a special for families. As of June 2010, for $10 per person, visitors can receive unlimited putt-putt golf plus 20 arcade tokens, according to the Putt-Putt Fun Center website.
