Austria-Hungary’s War Aims in WWI: Hold the Empire, Grab the Balkans, Check Russia
The Dual Monarchy entered WWI fighting for survival — not conquest. Four core ambitions:
1. 🛡 Preserve Territorial Integrity (Existential)
- 11 major nationalities, 50M people — nationalism was the solvent.
- Czech, South Slav, Romanian, Italian irredentism threatened breakup.
- War seen as “now or never” to crush separatism via victory.
2. 🗺 Expand in the Balkans (Opportunistic)
- Annexed Bosnia 1908 — wanted formal sovereignty + corridor to Aegean (Salonika).
- Viewed Serbia as “Piedmont of South Slavs” — must be crushed or clientized.
- Albania: create puppet state to block Serbian Adriatic access.
3. 🐻 Weaken Russia (Strategic)
- Russia = patron of Slavs, rival in Balkans, threat to Galicia/Bukovina.
- Hoped German alliance would pin Russia west, allow A-H to hold Carpathians.
- Fear: Russian collapse → revolution → contagion (happened 1917 — too late).
4. ⚖️ Maintain European Balance (Defensive)
- Triple Alliance (DE, A-H, IT) vs. Franco-Russian Alliance.
- A-H = hinge — if it falls, Germany fights two fronts alone.
- Wanted status quo ante + Balkan gains — not European hegemony.
❌ Why They All Failed
- Multi-ethnic army disintegrated (Czech, Croat, Slovene desertions).
- Brusilov Offensive (1916) broke Galician front.
- Sixtus Affair (1917) — secret peace feelers exposed, destroyed credibility.
- October 1918: National councils declared independence — empire dissolved before armistice.
Austria-Hungary fought to freeze history. History thawed.
