Siberia is not part of Europe. It lies entirely in North Asia.

The Boundary

• Ural Mountains (north-south 2,500 km) are the universally accepted Europe-Asia divide.
• Ural River continues the line to the Caspian Sea.
• Siberia begins east of the Urals and stretches to the Pacific.

Russia's Dual Continent Status

• European Russia (west of Urals): 23% of area, 77% of population (Moscow, St. Petersburg).
• Asian Russia (Siberia + Far East): 77% of area, 23% of population.

Why It Matters

Geology, ecology, climate, history, and demography all differ profoundly. Siberia = taiga, tundra, permafrost, resource extraction, Indigenous peoples (Yakuts, Buryats, Evenks), extreme cold. European Russia = temperate, agricultural, urbanized, Slavic core.
