Florida: The Lightning Capital of the United States
Florida averages 1.2+ million cloud-to-ground lightning strikes per year—the highest of any state by a wide margin.
Why Florida?
- Geography: Peninsula surrounded by warm water (Gulf + Atlantic) → abundant moisture.
- Sea Breezes: Daily collision of east/west coast sea breezes triggers thunderstorms (May–Oct).
- Heat & Instability: High temps + humidity = strong updrafts.
- Frequency: Central Florida ("Lightning Alley" Tampa–Orlando) sees 100+ thunderstorm days/year.
Comparison
- Texas: ~2nd in total strikes (larger area), but lower density.
- Louisiana, Mississippi, Alabama: high density but smaller area.
Safety
- Florida leads US in lightning fatalities (avg 7–10/year).
- Rule: "When thunder roars, go indoors."
- 30-30 rule: If thunder follows lightning by <30 sec, seek shelter; wait 30 min after last thunder.
