How many US reprensentatives can a state have?

The number of US Representatives a state can have is determined by its population. Every state is guaranteed at least one representative, regardless of its population. The most populous state, California, has 53 representatives. The least populous state, Wyoming, has one representative.

The total number of representatives in the US House of Representatives is 435. To determine how many representatives each state gets, the population of each state is divided by the total number of representatives. The resulting number is then rounded to the nearest whole number.

For example, California's population is about 39 million. When 39 million is divided by 435, the result is 89.42. Rounding this number to the nearest whole number gives California 89 representatives.

Wyoming's population is about 576,000. When 576,000 is divided by 435, the result is 1.32. Rounding this number to the nearest whole number gives Wyoming one representative.

The number of representatives each state has is updated after each census, which is conducted every 10 years. The most recent census was conducted in 2020. The next census will be conducted in 2030.
