Is Kansas City located just across the state boundary?

Kansas City is not located just across the state boundary. Kansas City is actually split between two states: Kansas and Missouri. The part of Kansas City that is in Kansas is called Kansas City, Kansas, and the part that is in Missouri is called Kansas City, Missouri.
