The Best Places to View Sunflowers in Kansas

The state of Kansas is located in the Midwestern part of the U.S. It is known as the Sunflower State, due to its magnificent displays of this well-loved yellow flower every summer into fall. The best places to view sunflowers in Kansas tend to be on the western side of the state along Highway I-70. You have your choice between real flowers and some fun fakes.
  1. Flint Hills

    • Find the Flint Hills area as you travel along Highway 177 in Central Kansas. The Kansas tourism website dubs this area "the largest segment of true prairie remaining in the U.S." In the fall, sunflowers are visible surrounded by the blues of wildflowers such as Pitcher's Sage and Gayfeather.

    Mulvane, Kansas

    • The town of Mulvane, Kansas is about 15 minutes away from Witchita. It is known for having an abundance of sunflower fields surrounding it. In fact, one Italian restaurant owner set up his establishment, Luciano's Restaurant, there because the fields reminded him so much of his home in Tuscany.

    Hutchinson, Kansas

    • The Hutchinson, Kansas area boasts several large parks. Visit prairies in the Sand Hill State Park. Carey Park even boasts a trail that is named The Sunflower Trail.

    Fake Sunflower Sightings

    • In addition to the large expanses of real sunflowers, Kansas also boasts a couple of attractions with some artificial sunflowers. These sights can be just about as awe-inspiring as the real thing. Mount Sunflower is in Wallace County on the Harold Family Ranch. Its claim to fame is a giant metal sculpture of a sunflower. If you prefer painting to sculpture, head over to Goodland, Kansas off Highway I-70. There you will find a giant replica of Vincent Van Gogh's "3 Sunflowers in a Vase" painting.
