How to Find What Section My Loved One Was Buried at Inside the Graveyard

Locating the grave of a loved one inside a graveyard can be a time-consuming process if you do not know where to look for the grave marker. Most larger cemeteries are divided into sections in order to help locate and identify grave sites more easily. You will almost always be able to find the grave you are looking for if you follow a few simple steps.

Instructions

    • 1

Verify your loved one's full name and date of death. Remember that many people do not go by their full legal name or may have obtained a grave marker with a former spouse who predeceased them.

    • 2

Contact the cemetery's office and ask for the location of your loved one's gravesite. Cemeteries keep and record all grave information, and cemetery staff should be able to tell you where your loved one is located and provide you with a description of the site. If the cemetery does not have an office, contact the funeral home that buried your loved one and ask them for the information.

    • 3

Go to a website specializing in locating gravesites, such as Find A Grave. Enter your loved one's information into the website and it may be able to use cemetery records and public information to provide you with the location of your loved one's grave.

Walk through the cemetery. Though it may be time consuming, if you walk through the cemetery in an orderly fashion (row by row or section by section) you will eventually be able to find the grave you are looking for. This can be very time consuming, which is why it is better to get the location prior to arriving. The benefit of this task is that it is virtually fail-proof. If you are in the correct cemetery, you will eventually come upon the grave using this method.
