How to Find the Size of an LP Tank

LP gas is also called liquid propane. This gas is commonly used for barbecue grills and RV or travel trailer stoves and heaters. LP tanks are available in four common sizes: 20, 30, 40 and 50 lb. capacities. LP gas is pumped into the tanks and compressed. To determine what size tank you have, use a simple method. LP tanks have the size stamped into the tank metal, near the neck.

Instructions

    • 1

Push away any coverings or dirt from the top part of the LP tank, particularly around the neck of the tank.

    • 2

Read the numbers and weight rating on the tank, which are typically found around the neck of the tank.

    • 3

Use the weight rating number, such as 20 pounds, as the LP tank size.
