What to Do With Kids in Upland, California

Upland, California sits at the base of the San Gabriel Mountains, about 40 miles east of Los Angeles. At time of publication, according to City-data.com, Upland is home to more than 70,000 people. It has come a long way from its humble, citrus producing roots. Upland is now known as "The City of Gracious Living" and offers a surprising number of activities for kids.
  1. Boomers!

    • Boomers! (boomersparks.com) is an Upland based, family entertainment center. It offers the usual choices of mini golf, go-karting, arcade games, batting cages and kiddie rides. However, Boomers! has a few less typical options available. Cosmic Golf lets visitors play mini golf on a course with glow-in-the-dark neon, and black lights. Kids can burn off energy scaling a 32-foot high climbing wall or get soaked on the bumper boats attraction. Boomers! describes the bumper boats as 'Demolition Derby on the high seas,' as each boat comes with its own water cannon. Boomers! is open seven days a week and hours vary by attraction. The Boomers! website runs weekly specials and promotions.

    Upland City Library

    • Upland City Library (uplandpl.lib.ca.us) has a variety of changing programs and events aimed at kids. One of the regular programs is called R.E.A.D. where children practice reading aloud to a receptive canine audience. After attending five times, each child receives a pawtographed, paperback book! Other library events range from laser light programs to puppet theatre and magic shows.

    Fun in the Park

    • Upland's Parks and Community Services Department (uplandpl.lib.ca.us) runs reasonably priced, youth classes in everything from horse riding to jujitsu kickboxing. The long list of available classes cover interests such as acting, farm animals, cooking, skateboarding, singing and cartoon drawing. Special events are also held at Upland's 15 parks. Examples include a kids' swap meet and Magnolia Park 'Splash Days,' which features sprinklers, a water slide and the Upland Fire Department. Upland also has a free 12,000 square foot skate park, for street style skating.

    Seasonal Activities

    • Upland has several yearly events that are great for kids. Each April, Upland holds a Lemon Festival. The festival has live entertainment, a carnival and a children's fair. On the day before Easter, the Upland Spring Egg Hunt and Pancake Breakfast takes place at Memorial Park. An Easter bunny is on site and is happy to pose for photos. This Kiwanis sponsored event is aimed at children ages 7 and under. The Second Avenue Market is held every Thursday evening, from April to October. This event is more than just a farmers' market, as there are live musical performances, food stands and rides for little ones. During the summer, the City of Upland offers free concerts and movies in Magnolia Park. The yearly calendar ends with the Children's Christmas Parade. During this televised event, kids can march along the parade route and enjoy being the center of attention.
