Northeast Travel Ideas

The northeastern U.S. has a lot of vacation options to offer travelers, everything from big cities and small towns to historical attractions and cultural activities. Whether you're on a budget, or seeking a luxury experience, you can find it in the oldest part of the country. If weather is important to you, unless you plan to partake in winter sports, the other times of the year--spring, summer and fall--are more ideal for travel to the Northeast.
  1. Pennsylvania

    • Pennsylvania offers a variety of places to vacation.

Pennsylvania offers a wide variety of destinations for vacations. Philadelphia and Pittsburgh, its two major cities, are host to many different cultural activities: museums, theatres, historic buildings, walking tours, sporting events, concerts and a lot more. Both cities have plenty of hotels, and public transportation is easy to navigate for those who don't have a car. For those who prefer a more active vacation, many areas around the Delaware Water Gap offer seasonal activities such as skiing, whitewater rafting, snow tubing, kayaking, snowboarding, fishing and more. Shawnee is a resort area that has several bed and breakfasts, hotels, inns and condos. Pennsylvania also has a number of theme parks, including Hershey Park, Sesame Place, Dorney Park and Dutch Wonderland.

    New Jersey

    • New Jersey is known as "The Garden State."

New Jersey doesn't necessarily bring thoughts of a great vacation to mind, but there are some really terrific places to vacation in the state, especially on the coast. Atlantic City, the Las Vegas of the East Coast, was the inspiration for the board game Monopoly; you'll see familiar street names such as "Marvin Gardens" and "Boardwalk" throughout the city. The famous Atlantic City Boardwalk parallels the beach and is lined with casinos, shops, attractions, hotels, places to eat and more. About an hour south of Atlantic City is the quaint beach town of Cape May. This little town, which has a boardwalk of its own, is a more family-friendly town than Atlantic City.

    New York

    • Manhattan is just eight miles long, but is the most famous part of New York.

When people who don't live in New York hear the suggestion to vacation there, they typically only think of Manhattan. While New York City has an enormous amount of activities for visitors, such as museums, theatre, restaurants and sporting events, there are many other areas in the state that are great vacation destinations. Long Island has some of the best beaches on the East Coast, including Montauk, which is known as a surfer's paradise. Other famous beaches on Long Island include Jones Beach, Fire Island and the beach communities of the Hamptons. Upstate New York is home to many farms, ranches, quaint bed and breakfasts, and even some casinos.

    Connecticut

    • Bridges are sprinkles throughout Connecticut.

The southern part of Connecticut is home to many attractions and vacation destinations. Mystic has one of the best aquariums on the East Coast: The Mystic Aquarium. A couple of towns over lies Foxwoods Resort & Casino, the biggest casino complex in North America. If you prefer a smaller casino, head over to Mohegan Sun, which is about a 15-minute drive from Foxwoods. Rhode Island and Boston are also relatively short drives away from Mystic and the surrounding areas.
