What Townships Are in Huron County, Michigan?

Huron County sits in Michigan's "thumb" peninsula, approximately three hours north of Detroit. Among the county's 28 townships exist small communities that offer proximity to the county seat in Bad Axe while maintaining an atmosphere of rural quiet. Many of Huron County's township residents derive their income from agriculture, though the beaches of Saginaw Bay and Lake Huron provide a tourism-based economy as well. Here's just a sampling of Huron County's more predominant townships.
  1. Caseville Township

    • Caseville Township sits on the western side of Michigan's thumb, along a peninsula that juts out along the northern shore of Wild Fowl Bay. The township administers its own town government, which includes a clerk, treasurer, assessor and supervisor. Visitors to Caseville Township can drive to Sleeper State Park in less than half an hour. The 2000 census indicates that Caseville Township has 2,723 residents living within the town's 14.2 square miles. Crescent Beach Road runs along the peninsula into the township.

    Colfax Township

    • Colfax Township, located along the western edge of the city of Bad Axe, is a civil township with 1,954 residents as of the 2000 census. The Huron County Memorial Airport is nine minutes east of the township. Colfax Township sits along the Pinnebog River and includes the small town of Popple. Colfax residents have easy access to the Huron Medical Center, located three minutes from the township along South Van Dyke Road.

    Hume Township

    • Near the northern tip of Michigan's "thumb," Hume Township provides a pleasant destination for tourists who want to enjoy the beauty of the Great Lakes. The Port Crescent State Park is five minutes from Hume Township, Rush Lake is a 16-minute drive away, and the McGraw and Oak Beach County Parks are also nearby. As of the 2000 census, the population of Hume Township stood at 801 residents. Hume township borders the village of Kinde and includes the village of Pinnebog.

    Lake Township

    • Lake Township, just west of Rush Lake, faces Lake Huron in the Saginaw Bay. The township invites tourists to visit and enjoy the area's hiking trails through the area woods, fishing, water sports and close proximity to Doerr Lake and Sleeper State Park. Sand Road traverses the township, connecting with the nearby main artery Port Austin Road.
