Kids' Activities in Columbia, Maryland

Columbia, Maryland, is a planned community that was founded in 1967. It is located in Howard County. As of 2011, more than 100,000 residents live in Columbia's nine villages and Town Center. There are more than 5,500 businesses in the town, including a number of businesses that specialize in activities for kids.
  1. Miniature Golf

    • An 18-hole miniature golf course is located in the Columbia Association SportsPark (columbiasportspark.org). The course includes a variety of obstacles including a bridge, water hazards and downhill steeps. The holes are mostly par-2 or par-3, but there are three par-4 holes. Ponds, waterfalls, streams and plants surround the course. At the time of publication, the cost to play miniature golf was $7 per person for nonresidents.

    Ice-Skating

    • There is also a public ice skating rink located in the Columbia Association SportsPark (columbiasportspark.org). The rink is open to the public year-round. Guests can bring their own ice skates or rent them from the facility. Walkers and cones are available to assist new skaters. In addition to skating, you can also enjoy food from the snack bar.

    Earth Treks Indoor Rock Climbing

    • Children ages 5 and older will enjoy rock climbing at Earth Treks (earthtreksclimbing.com) in Columbia, Maryland. The 20,000-square-foot indoor rock climbing facility offers climbing walls for all abilities and ages. On Saturday and Sunday, kids can participate in open climbing from 9 a.m. to 5 p.m. If they enjoy it, they can sign up for further instruction through summer camps or climbing teams.

    My Gym

    • My Gym (my-gym.com) offers gymnastics and fitness classes for kids ages 6 weeks to 13. Classes use music, dance, tumbling, games and sports while teaching kids balance, coordination, agility and flexibility. While participating in classes, kids also learn social skills and gain self-esteem. Classes are available Monday through Friday.

    Martial Arts

    • Kids can participate in martial arts instruction at Wilde Lake Karate and Learning Center (wildelakekarate.com). If a child is not ready to sign-up for individual martial arts classes, he might be interested in the after-school program that mixes limited martial arts instruction with homework assistance and crafts. Wilde Lake Karate will provide transportation to its facility from school for kids from kindergarten to eighth grade. A summer camp is also available that provides kids with exposure to martial arts, bowling, swimming and field trips.
