Lakes in the Poconos

The Lakes Region in the Pocono Mountain area of northeastern Pennsylvania is a popular vacation destination for visitors who enjoy water sports. Swimming, fishing, boating, canoeing, water skiing and lakeshore camping are some of the recreational opportunities available to those who visit or live near any of the 150 lakes found in the Pocono Mountains. Vacationers can take advantage of commercially developed residential lakeside communities with private lakes, which provide year-round residences or a shorter stay at vacation cottages, campgrounds or rental cottages available on local, county or state government-owned park lands.

  1. Prompton Lake

    • Prompton Lake, the 290-acre centerpiece of Pennsylvania's Prompton State Park, provides vactioners and summer residents recreational opportunities such as hiking and boating. Operated by the U.S. Army Corps of Engineers, this lakefront is located in the northeastern corner of the Pocono Mountains Lake Region near Dalton, Pennsylvania, and is a fishery for warm-water species such as crappie, large-mouth bass and lake perch. Seasonal hunting is allowed on the surrounding state-park lands with proper licensure, and the park boasts a disc golf course and 26 miles of hiking trails along the lake shoreline.

    Lake Naomi

    • The privately owned and man-made Lake Naomi is located in Poconos Pines, Pennsylvania, and offers real estate rentals and sales to the seasonal vacationer or year-round resident on the shoreline of its 277-acre lake. Within a two-hour drive from Philadelphia, this lakeshore community is surrounded by Pennsylvania State Forest Park lands and is often used by city residents as a weekend escape destination. A membership to The Lake Naomi Club homeowners' association allows property owners to enjoy swimming and sailing opportunities at seven maintained beach areas, stocked lake fishing and boat launch facilities.

    Lake Wallenpaupack

    • Lake Wallenpaupack was made in 1927 when the Pennsylvania Power and Light Companies Hydroelectrical Dam was built for area energy production. This large 52,000-acre man-made lake offers six recreational areas on its 52 miles of shoreline, and its visitor information center is located in nearby Greentown, Pennsylvania. Privately owned lakefront homes with private lake rights cover the shoreline as well as several vacation rental properties and residential communities. Boating, fishing and swimming are all allowed from developed or privately owned shoreline areas and campsites, and hiking trails are available within the 12,150 acres of surveyed forest land surrounding Lake Wallenpaupack.

    Lake Henry

    • Fed by a tributary of Jones Creek, Lake Henry is located in the southern portion of Wayne County, Pennsylvania, and vacationers and weekend water recreation enthusiasts come to enjoy fishing either from its shore or while boating. Owned by the Lake Henry Cottagers Association (LHCA), this 310-acre lake is home to many privately owned residential cottages and has never seen commercial development. LHCA members, such as Clayton Park Recreational Area, individually own and operate lakeside businesses such as campgrounds, marinas and cottage rental properties. Canoe rentals, swimming, picnicking and hiking on nearby Blueberry Hill are available near the lake.
