There is more to Wisconsin than the Dells and the Green Bay Packers. If you are looking to take a trip that is a little off the beaten path, Wisconsin could be the place for you. Whether you are a mustard fanatic or have a soft spot for giant beer cans, there is something for everyone in Wisconsin.
Located in La Crosse, Wisconsin, the World's Largest Six Pack was built in the late 1960s. The Six Pack was not initially built as a tourist attraction, but rather as storage tanks for beer at the Heileman Brewery, which was located there at the time. It is unclear whether the storage tanks were built to look like beer cans, or whether that was an accident.
After they were built, however, they were painted to look like beer cans and though breweries have been in and out of that location for years, the six giant beer cans still stand.
The House on the Rock in Spring Green, Wisconsin, includes a museum, a hotel and a golf course. The museum is an unusual collection of artifacts and memorabilia and was designed by the architect Alex Jordan, who studied under Frank Lloyd Wright. Artifacts in the museum include a full-sized carousel.
Other attractions at the House on the Rock include exhibits outside the original house such as The Streets of Yesterday and the Heritage of the Sea, featuring a 200-foot sea monster.
Mount Horeb, in southern Wisconsin, prides itself on being the troll capital of the world. The troll history dates back to the late 1800s when the town was settled by Norwegians; trolls were part of traditional Scandinavian folklore.
Trollway is the local name for the interstate running around the town. There are many events in the city, including day and group tours. A map of the "troll locations" in Mount Horeb is available if you want to seek out the trolls yourself.
The National Mustard Museum is located in Middleton, Wisconsin and currently displays 5,300 jars of prepared mustard. Along with mustards from all over the world, there are several other attractions at the museum, including the "Mustardpiece Theatre", which features films such as "Mustard: The Spice of Nations". Additionally, there are interactive quizzes about the information presented in the theater, a tasting bar, the Great Wall of Mustard and a gift shop where many different kinds of mustard may be purchased.
