New York Bread Restaurants

Bread shops and bakeries are scattered all over New York, and many have either started out by--or have begun to serve--meals along with baked goods. Many speciality bakeries carry gluten-free and wheat-free varieties for the health conscious and those with allergies. If you are in New York on business or pleasure, you won't have any trouble finding a bread restaurant.

  1. Chelsea

    • The Big Booty Bread Company is the second family business for the Rojas family that has been in business in New York and New Jersey for more than 30 years. This eclectic bake shop is known to get regular visits from stars, such as Kate Winslet, who are often seeking gluten-free and wheat-free bread options. The menu at the restaurant is heavy on the sweets and items such as carrot cake, dulce de leche, and red velvet cupcakes are plentiful. Guests looking for a quick lunch can enjoy a traditional Empanada stuffed with a choice of meat and cheese. The restaurant is in the trendy Chelsea neighborhood.

    The Theater District

    • Amy's Bread has two restaurants in New York City. One is in the heart of the The Theater District near Broadway and Times Square and the other is located in the trendy and hip Hell's Kitchen neighborhood. The company also has a bakery outlet in Greenwich Village. The focus here is clearly on bread and items associated with bread. Hearty sandwiches are created in a fast-paced environment and include selections such as roast turkey on semolina raisin and fennel bread with romaine lettuce, cranberry and mayonnaise and grilled New York state cheddar sandwich, which combines spicy chipotle pepper puree, thinly sliced red onions, tomatoes and fresh cilantro. Kids will appreciate a peanut butter and jelly sandwich at Amy's Bread, and parents will like the fact that it is served on wheat bread with unsweetened peanut butter and strawberry preserves.

    Nolita

    • Bread is a destination in the Nolita neighborhood of New York City for visitors and locals looking for creations served on hearty bread options. The restaurant is designed to be comfortable and only offers a few tables along with a large bar area that can host small gatherings and events. The menu at Bread offers several choices served on bread including sandwiches, such as a handmade mozzarella sandwich and a goat-cheese sandwich. The restaurant also serves soups, salads and starters such as sauteed octopus and bowls of Greek olives. Bakery selections include loaves of fresh bread and dessert items that can be taken to-go.

    Brooklyn

    • Bread Stuy is located in the heart of Brooklyn just under the famous Brooklyn Bridge. This restaurant started as a bakery but has gone on to offer a number of meal selections. Choices as of January, 2011 included a red curry chicken salad, couscous, a variety of panini sandwiches and several types of hummus. Guests often visit just to take a selection of $3 loaves of bread home with them. Pies, cakes and pastries are also available.

    Staten Island

    • Pasticceria Bruno is located on Staten Island and is known for it's fresh-baked selection of breads and pastries and for its diverse food menu. The family-style restaurant serves a bit of everything from seafood to steaks and has a special menu available for children. Menu items include items such as crab cakes, stuffed French toast, custom-made sandwiches and a list of salads. Sunday brunch is available by reservation and is served with the restaurant's signature mimosas.
