How to Camp in Deep Creek Lake State Park, Maryland

Deep Creek Lake State Park in Maryland has about one mile of shoreline on the largest man-made lake in the state. The park provides access for fishing and swimming. Ranger-led interpretive events such as hikes and campfire talks are offered by park naturalists throughout the year. A boat launch is available, for a fee, and the lake is stocked with bass, walleye, trout and yellow perch, making fishing a popular activity. Deep Creek Lake State Park maintains hiking trails from easy to challenging. Cross country skiing and snowmobiling are popular winter activities in the park. The park grooms mountain biking trails as well. Tent, RV and cabin camping are available through much of the year.

      Choose a date for camping at Deep Creek Lake State Park. Camping on a first come, first served basis is available from April 15, 2011 until May 26, 2011 in the spring and from Sept. 21, 2011 to Dec. 15, 2011 in the fall and winter. Reservations can be made for camping from May 27, 2011 until Sept. 20, 2011 and are highly recommended.

      Select accommodations from a variety of options. Deep Creek Lake State Park offers tent camping with no electric hookups and tent or RV camping with electric hookups and dump stations. Two room camper cabins are ideal for a family of four. They have a double bed in one room and a set of bunk beds in the other. The yurt, a tent with a floor, has a double bed, two sets of bunks, a table and six chairs. All sites include a picnic table and fire pit.

      To make advance reservations, go to Reserveamerica.com and enter the type of accommodations you desire, the state of Maryland, the park name Deep Creek Lake, the date of the first night you would like to camp and the number of nights you intend to stay. Click "Search" to see a list of available camp sites. Select a site and continue to the payment screen. You will receive a confirmation number at the end of the reservation process. Print out the confirmation to take with you.

      Arrive at the campground before sunset to set up the tent or put bedding on the beds in the cabins. Obtain firewood from the camp store if you intend to have a fire. Outside firewood is not allowed.

      Locate the bathroom facilities and place a flashlight on the picnic table or in easy reach before darkness falls.
