How to Camp Near Yellowstone Park

The natural beauty of Yellowstone National Park draws thousands of tourists to the state of Wyoming every year, typically in the spring and summer. The entire region sits atop one of the world's largest super-volcanoes and all the geothermal pools and geysers in the region are created by this subterranean hot spot. Campgrounds dot the landscape of Yellowstone, as well as the surrounding area. During peak tourist season from May to August, it may be difficult to find a campground within the park. If you find it difficult or too crowded to camp within Yellowstone, numerous other campgrounds are available outside the park.

Instructions

    • 1

Camp near the Sleeping Giant Ski Area, just outside the eastern Yellowstone Park boundary. This region offers the closest campgrounds outside of the park, such as nearby Newton Creek and Elk Fork Campgrounds. The campgrounds offer both developed and primitive campsites and attendants are on hand. Hours and fees fluctuate seasonally.

Access Crazy Creek campground just outside of the northeastern Yellowstone boundary via Highway 212. Crazy Creek is the closest campground near the Montana border, near Cooke City. Hours and fees fluctuate seasonally and the region may be closed in heavy snow.

    • 3

Set camp anywhere in a cleared or designated Bureau of Land Management (BLM) area around the Yellowstone Park boundary. BLM lands are clearly posted and some may require a fee if the campgrounds are considered developed; other park-and-camp areas may not require a fee. Most BLM areas will not have an attendant and fees--if required--are paid through the honor box system. The fee is dropped in a designated box and the responsibility for paying the fee is up to the camper.
