Yellowstone National Park is one of the most visited tourist spots in the country. Many people wish to go swimming in the abundant hot springs located in and around the park. However, not every place is suitable for such activity. You could get into trouble with the authorities, not to mention cause bodily injury to yourself, if you attempt to swim or wade in the wrong waters.
Drink plenty of fluids before attempting to swim at Yellowstone. Your body will dehydrate faster than normal due to the altitude and weather conditions. When you're dehydrated, you're more likely to suffer from fatigue. This makes basic activities such as swimming more difficult.
Look for signs throughout the park regarding swimming. Many times, places which are normally open for swimming will be closed due to a shift in temperature or higher waters than normal. Swimming in any place that is closed off will result in a fine.
Visit the Boiling River near the Mammoth Hot Springs. The water where the Boiling River meets the Gardiner River is at a safe temperature and is normally open. Ask a park ranger to point you in the right direction or print a map from your computer. This location is not on the maps found at visitor centers.
Swim in the cool waters at Firehole Canyon. This may be the most popular spot for swimmers at Yellowstone. Some people even dive into the water from the canyon walls. This is a very dangerous activity and is not recommended. You can find the canyon by acquiring a map from one of the visitor centers in the park.
