How to Spend a Day in Yellowstone National Park

As the first national park, Yellowstone holds a special place in many hearts. Located in Montana, Idaho and Wyoming, the park has many points of interest to tour and things to do. Seeing everything in a day is impossible, but taste a sample of what Yellowstone National Park has to offer.

Instructions

    • 1

Start at one of the visitor centers for information about the park and to learn about any road or area closings. View the exhibits and talk to park rangers about the park, activities and wildlife.

    • 2

Watch Old Faithful erupt. This geyser is the biggest attraction in Yellowstone. Erupting every 35 to 120 minutes, the geyser can't be predicted from more than the last eruption. While you wait, walk the 1.4 mile trail to the Morning Glory Pool or visit some of the other geysers in the Upper Geyser Basin.

    • 3

Drive the Terrace Drive by Mammoth Hot Springs. Walk the boardwalk by the hot springs if you have time and are interested.

    • 4

Hike down to the edge of the Lower Falls in the Grand Canyon of Yellowstone. The waterfall is one of the most photographed areas of Yellowstone, and you won't want to miss the views from the rim or from the edge of the waterfall. The trail is 3/8 of a mile one way.

    • 5

Watch for wildlife in Yellowstone. Grey wolves are sometimes spotted in Lamar Valley. Grizzly bears are most often viewed in open meadows, while black bears prefer forested areas. Bison often feed in Lamar and Hayden Valleys and moose are often found at Willow Park.

    • 6

Take a tour through Yellowstone. A number of operators offer guided bus or van tours through Yellowstone, hitting the most popular attractions. With only one day, these tours are a great option to see the top sites and learn about the park, wildlife and ecology. Rather than having to concentrate on the road, you can look for wildlife and take in the scenery.

Join a ranger hike. These hikes take place at most of the popular attractions and offer additional insight into the site. Visit the official Yellowstone National Park website for information on times, places and topics.
