How to Spend a Day in Rocky Mountain National Park

Rocky Mountain National Park in Colorado is a popular vacation destination. Although best experienced over several days to weeks, you can sample what the park has to offer in a day if needed. Combining a few park activities can make a rewarding day.

Instructions

    • 1

Drive the Trail Ridge Road connecting Estes Park to Grand Lake. This 48 mile highway climbs to over 12,000 feet and takes about 3 hours to drive, including stops at scenic viewpoints.

    • 2

Take a hike. With over 355 miles of trails, Rocky Mountain National Park has a variety of hiking alternatives. When time is short, opt for a shorter or easier hike. Try the Adams or Alberta Falls trails for waterfalls or the Bear Lake trail, which circles the subalpine lake.

    • 3

Watch for wildlife as you drive or hike around the park. Keep an eye out for black bears, elk, moose, mule deer, bighorn sheep, cougars and other smaller animals. Early morning and dusk are the best times to catch sight of wildlife.

    • 4

Visit one of the visitor centers or museums within the park. At the visitor's center, you can watch a short video about the park, take a guided hike with a ranger and view exhibits.

    • 5

Have a picnic along your driving or hiking route and enjoy the scenery. The official Rocky Mountain National Park website has information on picnic areas and fire pits.

    • 6

Climb rocks. The trail to Gem Lake has boulders which are perfect for children to climb on. Adults will also enjoy bouldering or climbing on the mountains' rock faces. Check with park rangers for places to climb or take a class to learn the activity.
