How to Go Camping at Crater Lake National Park

Crater Lake National Park in Southern Oregon features a pure, intensely blue lake surrounded by sheer cliffs. At 1,958 feet deep, Crater Lake is the deepest lake in the United States and the seventh deepest in the world. It lies inside a volcanic basin created almost 8,000 years ago when Mount Mazama erupted and then collapsed. Read on for more information on camping in this natural wonder.

      Decide which of the two campgrounds you would like to use or if you would prefer backcountry camping.

      Choose Lost Creek Campground if you're looking for a smaller, simpler campground. Lost Creek has 16 tent sites and is open from mid-July to early October, depending on the weather. Flush toilets, picnic tables and fire rings are available. The fee is $10 and is on a first-come, first-served basis.

      Choose Mazama if you're looking for a larger campground with more facilites. It has 200 campsites, flush toilets, picnic tables, water, fire rings, laundry, a dump station, showers, groceries, wheelchair-accessible sites and a service station, and is open from early June to early October. No hook-ups are available. The tent camping fee is $14.75 per night. The RV camping fee is $15.75 per night. If you have more than two adults in a campsite, plan on paying an extra $3 for each additional person.

      Obtain a free permit from either of the park's visitor's centers if you would like to backcountry camp.
