Montana RV Camping

Montana offers national parks, history and activities in both winter and summer. Visitors can find experiences ranging from dinosaurs and rodeos to dog sledding.
  1. National Parks

    • Montana has two national parks-- Glacier National Park in the north and Yellowstone National Park in the south. Glacier National Park tends to provide activities that are more winter-based, such as skiing, while Yellowstone, with its hiking trails, hot springs and geysers offers warm-weather activities.

    State Parks

    • Hell Creek State Park is 25 mile north of Jordan, on Fort Peck Lake. This park allows most water sports as well as fishing and it has fish cleaning station for campers to use. The park has a dump station for RVs and drinkable water but no electricity, restrooms and showers. Placid Lake State Park is near the western border of the state--a one-hour drive east from Missoula. This park offers activities such as boating, swimming and fishing. Campsites include electricity and water and the campground features toilets and showers.

    Activities

    • Montana offers many opportunities for scenic or wildlife photos. Other popular outdoor activities include hiking, biking, fishing, rafting, boating and horseback riding. In the winter, skiing and the dog sledding are popular in the northwest corner of the state. The Fairmont Hot Springs Resort in Fairmont is one of many resorts that feature the states natural hot springs.

    Historical Sites

    • Montana historical sites include the town of Garnet, which was a gold mining town in the 1800s. The Lewis and Clark National Historic Trail Interpretive Center offers information about the famous 19th century expedition.

    Dangerous Animals

    • Montana is home to many animals that could prove dangerous if encountered while camping. Animals such as bears and mountain lions are always a potential threat when hiking on a trail. Snakes and some insects are also of concern if humans stray into their territory--the bite or sting from some can injure and sometimes kill.
